I miss my Swedish salty liquorice!

According to Fazer salty liquorice is popular mostly in the Nordic countries together with the Netherlands and Germany. Some sources also mention the Baltic countries. But apparently it is certain parts of the northern hemisphere. Finland is the number one nation eating salty liquorice it seems!

Liquorice is popular in a larger area but then it is normally the so called “sweet” liquorice, i.e. not the salty kind which is so popular in the Nordic countries.

I really miss it! Some of the favourites you can see here above 😊. But the funny thing is that most foreigners who try it find it (let’s be honest) – disgusting! 😉

It is definitely an acquired taste but for those of us who grew up with it is one of the things we miss when living abroad. I know people who prioritize packing the suitcase full with salty liquorice, or salmiak as it is also called, before packing clothes. It is also one of those things which are the first thing we ask people coming to visit to bring us; “Please buy some salty liquorice with you – I will pay you! As much as you can bring, please!”

When teaching Swedish to foreigners it’s part of my job to also teach them about Swedish culture, traditions, values etc. and of course the habit of eating salty liquorice comes up. I have to say that through all the years I have taught Swedish language & culture I have yet to find someone who actually likes it!
